How to Update GB WhatsApp Without Losing Chats

An in-place update keeps your chats, photos and voice notes only when you back up first and never uninstall first. Here's the safe path and fixes for the update errors you're likely to hit.

Why You Should Update Promptly
- Old builds stop working. The "This version has expired" screen locks outdated copies until you update.
- Fixes only arrive as new APKs. There is no Play Store channel, so bug and security fixes reach you only when you install a newer build.
- Not a ban shield. We have not verified that any version lowers ban risk; see how bans work.
Sensible cadence: update every 2–3 months, or within a week of a new release.
The Golden Rule of GB WhatsApp Updates
An update means installing the new APK over the existing app. When the new APK comes from the same build family, Android performs an in-place upgrade: the app is replaced, your data is untouched. A file from a different build may install as a second app or be refused. Uninstalling first wipes your chats — that's the single mistake behind almost every "update deleted my messages" story.

Open GB WhatsApp → GB Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back Up. This writes a local backup to your phone's storage and takes a minute or two.
For real insurance, also copy the entire GBWhatsApp folder from internal storage to your PC, SD card or cloud drive. It contains the Backups and Media folders — everything you need to rebuild your chats even if the phone dies mid-update. Don't rely on Google Drive: restore from Drive is unreliable on mod builds.
Check that the backup has finished and shows the expected date. Confirm that your separate copy contains the backup files and the media you want to keep. Record your current app version so you can confirm the update afterwards.

Step 3 — Get the APK

If the Update Fails: Troubleshooting

FAQ
Will I lose my chats if I update GB WhatsApp?
Not if the new APK comes from the same build family as the installed app and you back up first. If it comes from a different build, it may install as a separate app or refuse to update, and your chats stay in the old one. Restoring into a different build is not guaranteed.
Do I need to uninstall the old version before updating?
No — never uninstall first. Uninstalling wipes your chat data. Only when you switch to a different build family (signature mismatch error) is uninstalling unavoidable, and even then only after a full local backup.
Why does it say App not installed when I try to update?
Almost always a signature mismatch: the new APK comes from a different modder or build family than your installed copy, so Android refuses the in-place update. Back up, copy the GBWhatsApp folder to safety, uninstall, reinstall, and restore. Low storage causes the same error.
Can I update GB WhatsApp through the Google Play Store?
